Clinical Observations on Premature and Low Birth Weight Infants

Abstract
In order to estimate the frequency of occurence of premature and low birth weight infant, the clinical data on the all infants born at the Kyungpook Natio~ial University Hospital were studied and tlThe frequency of occurrence of premature infants among the live birth was found to be 5.0 percent and low birth weight infants 7.1 percent. However, no annual variation both in ocurrence and in sex was observed. It was noted that more than half of these infants had the birth weight varied from 2, 000 to 2.5008 and their gestational period ranged from 28 to 37 weeks.
The common preceding factors to premature and low birth weight infants delivery were included toxemia(18.3 0) and twin delivery(16.1jo) The mortality rate among the premature and low birth weight: infants was 20.9 percent and the rate was inversely correlated to the gestational age and the birth weight as well as it was high in both the shorter gestational age and the lower birth, tiveight: groups.
In the present study, the most common cause of infant death was found to be postaatai asphyxia with a rate of 40.5 percent. The initial weight loss was apparent in the group cf Iower birth weight infants. In the first month of life, regain and true weight gain was somewhat slrwer in the lower birth weight group.
